Casper at a Glance
Casper, located near the center of Wyoming,
sits in the foothills of the Laramie Mountains, a branch of the Rockies and
along the North Platte River. This spot with abundant wildlife and preserved
wilderness is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts. Popular activities include
hunting, fishing, kayaking and whitewater rafting. Hogadon
Ski Area is located just south of the city on Casper Mountain, providing
winter fun for skiiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers. Casper was an important
stop in frontier days and was a hub for several pioneer trails, including the
Oregon Trail. This history is represented at the National
Historic Trails Interpretive Center, which is dedicated to the hundreds
of thousands of immigrants to the Western Plains. Oil was discovered in the
Casper area in the late 19th century at the Salt Creek Oil Field, which brought
prosperity to the area, and has helped to grow into one of the most important
centers in Wyoming.
